Privacy Policy
Contomi ("we," "us," or "our") respects your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, and how we handle it. If something here is unclear, write to us at hello@contomi.app and we'll explain in plain language.
1. Information we collect
1.1 Information you give us
- Account info. If you sign in, we store your name, email address, and a profile picture (if you provide one).
- Splits and groups. When you create a split, we store the receipt items, amounts, the people in the group, and how the items were assigned. Group members you invite are stored as contacts within Contomi.
- Receipt images. Photos you take to scan a bill. See Section 3 for how these are handled.
- Support messages. When you contact us, we keep a record of the conversation so we can follow up.
1.2 Information we collect automatically
- Device and usage data. Operating system, app version, crash logs, anonymized event data (e.g. "scanned a receipt", "completed a split").
- Approximate location. Country-level only, derived from IP, used for tax/currency defaults. We do not collect precise location.
2. How we use your information
- To provide and improve the Contomi app and its features.
- To sync your splits across your devices and with people in your groups.
- To diagnose crashes and fix bugs.
- To respond to your support requests.
- To send you transactional emails (e.g. account confirmation, security alerts). We do not send marketing emails without your explicit opt-in.
3. Receipt images and OCR
When you scan a receipt, Contomi attempts to extract items and prices on your device. If on-device OCR is unavailable or fails, the image may be uploaded to our processing service over an encrypted connection. In that case:
- The image is processed and discarded — typically within seconds, and always within 24 hours.
- We do not retain the image content for training or analytics.
- The extracted text (item names and prices) is stored as part of the split, since it's the data you came to use.
4. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only in these limited cases:
- With people in your groups. When you split a bill, the people you add can see the items, amounts, and who's been assigned what.
- With service providers. Hosting, error monitoring, OCR, and analytics vendors who process data on our behalf under written contracts.
- For legal reasons. If required by law, court order, or to protect our rights and the safety of our users.
- In a business transfer. If Contomi is acquired or merges with another company, your data may transfer as part of that transaction; you'll be notified before any change in how it's used.
5. Data retention
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we remove personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law (e.g. financial records, tax compliance). Anonymized aggregate analytics may persist beyond that.
6. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate data.
- Delete your account and associated data.
- Export your data in a portable format.
- Object to certain types of processing, including any automated decision-making.
To exercise any of these, email hello@contomi.app from the address on your account, or use Profile → Settings inside the app.
7. Security
We use industry-standard encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access to production systems is restricted and audited. No system is perfectly secure — if we ever discover a breach affecting your data, we'll notify you promptly and explain what happened.
8. Children
Contomi is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU/UK). We don't knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided personal data, contact us and we'll delete it.
9. International transfers
We're based in the United States, and your data may be processed there or in other countries our service providers operate from. Where required, we use Standard Contractual Clauses or similar safeguards for cross-border transfers.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a material way, we'll let you know in the app and update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use after the change constitutes acceptance.
